You have probably already noticed your child is ready for summer vacation. Our last day of school for the 2016-2017 school year is Friday, May 19th. We will dismiss school at 12:30 PM.
Your child will be bringing home most— if not, all of his/her school supplies TOMORROW--Thursday, May 18th.
On the last day of school (Friday), your child will receive his/her grade card–if all lunch charges are paid, Tiger Tales charges are paid, library books returned, etc. Your child will also be bringing home his/her Data Binder. So, your child WILL need his/her backpack. We will also reminisce over our year together.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I feel so blessed! I want to thank you for all the goodies this week--bottles of water, peanut M & Ms, patriotic pictures & kind notes, and all the other thoughtful gifts. You have been so kind and generous. Please know I treasure each one. (My goal for this weekend is to write personal thank you notes to students.) Again, thank you. I am so very blessed to be your child's teacher this year.

Our Field Trip was the BEST DAY EVER!
Students really enjoyed their outing to see the Springfield Cardinals play the Midland Rockhounds. Before the game, the students had a short program by Cox Health talking about the importance of staying healthy. Do you know how many teaspoons of sugar is in a 20-ounce bottle of soda? Ask your child for the answer. :)
For photos of our day, click on the photos page. If you need the password, please email me.
A special thank you to all the parents who volunteered to spend part of their day with us. We could not have done it without you.

Field Day Volunteers Needed
Field Day 2017 is right around the corner! Coach Ferguson is needing parent volunteers to help with this fun event! Each volunteer is asked to work either a morning or afternoon session (only 1/2 day). Pre-K, K, and 1st graders will have their Field Day in the morning...2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders will have their Field Day in the afternoon. If you volunteer, you are encouraged to work a station opposite of when your child's Field Day is scheduled (i.e., work a morning station (9;15-11:30) if you have a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grader...work an afternoon station (12;45-3:00) if you have a Pre-K, K or 1st grader). This will allow you the opportunity to watch your child's class and help the classroom teacher while they participate in the activities. If you are interested in helping run a Field Day station, please contact Coach Ferguson at [email protected] or call 862-6308 ext. 1164. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

The last two weeks in science, students have been learning about matter! They have learned about the three different states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. On Wednesday, we made Root Beer Floats. Unfortunately I did not get any pictures of that lesson, but I assure you, it was a blast!

Columbus Activities/Fall Party
This week we have been working on Columbus Day activities. On Thursday, we made ships from foil, egg cartons, Play-Doh, and straws. Then we put them in water to see if they would float. The students had lots of fun making their boats then seeing if their boat would float. We determined that Christopher Columbus would not have wanted to purchase his boat a few of our friends. (Pictures are located on the Photos page.)
We had a wonderful fall party today!! Thank you to all the parents who sent in treats, helped plan/organize, and helped out on party day. I know students enjoyed it! (Pictures are located on the Photos page.)

Message from Nurse Brandy--
There have been multiple, confirmed cases, of strep throat at our school. The best way to prevent illness is to wash hands frequently and to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Good nutrition (fresh fruits, veggies, protein) and getting enough rest are also key components of staying healthy and warding off any illness.
Some symptoms of strep include (but are not limited to):
fever (100.4 or greater)
Swollen, red tonsils (may have white patches on tonsils)/severe sore throat
body aches
headache
stomachache
fatigue
general feeling of unwell (malaise)
If your child has a fever, diarrhea, and/or vomiting, they are required by our school policy to stay home until any or all symptoms are completely gone, without help from medication, for a full 24 hours. It is vital that they stay home if they are ill, in order to help ensure that others are not exposed.
Thank you for your continued efforts to help keep our kids healthy and thriving!!!

Day of Service
Friday was our first Day of Service! Students were eager to get to work! We worked on cleaning the walls and getting scuff marks off the floor. After our work was complete, we had a class discussion about what we learned. Students said that they learned about leadership because it takes all of us to make our school a clean place! Willard South is growing leaders, and we so excited!
I wish I could promise you that your child will clean his or her room with the same excitement. However, I am thinking we might need to make that a goal for the coming month. Hmm.

Sink or Float
I think the highlight of this past week was doing another science experiment! First, the children made a hypothesis (guess) whether or not the items we selected would sink or float when we put the items in water. Then the children placed their items into the water. Finally, we recorded our results in our science notebooks. From the excitement in the room, I do believe the children love science! I love how science sparks the students' interest and how it creates a spark for their writing, as well.

How Many Drops of Water?
The students had lots of fun making their predictions then conducting their experiments. In our test, it made a difference if the penny was dull or shiny. It also made a difference if we were putting the drops of water on the head side of the coin or the tail side of a coin. If your little scientist would like to try this experiment again at home, please click HERE for the directions.

"Our Mad Scientists"
This has been a busy week. To help celebrate, we made "Mad Scientists" this week. We learned scientists ask questions to learn, form a hypothesis, test a hypothesis, record their data, and come to a conclusion. In the coming weeks, we will be learning more about the scientific method. |
Family and Fun
WOW! It has been a fun week of learning. We are continuing to build stamina for our Read to Self and Read to Someone during Readers Workshop. Math Workshop has been interesting. We've decided that mathematicians need to be able to explain their answers which has been challenging for first graders. :) We are continuing to learn our Word Wall Words--we even found those words in our green dictionaries. Yippee! However, Science seems to be the most interesting subject. We've talked about how scientists make observations and the tools scientists use.
After our week of learning, we are now ready for family and fun. School will not be in session on Friday, September 2nd and Monday, September 5th. I hope you all are able to spend a fun-filled family weekend!

August 22-26
Another week of first grade has come and gone! Check out some of the things we've been working on:
Reading: This week we continued building our stamina for Read to Self and Read to Someone. We worked our way up to 12 minutes for Read to Self!! Congratulate your first grader on this HUGE accomplishment. That is a long time to sit and read quietly. Our goal is to make it to 20 minutes. We should reach this goal on next Friday!
Writing: We started writing personal narratives this week! These are true stories that tell about one time in our lives. Students wrote about a special place this week. Some wrote about going to the pool while others wrote about visiting their grandma's house.Below is some pictures of us working on our writing.
Math: This week in math we worked on using addition and subtraction equations to find the missing addend. This a fairly tricky concept! We worked hard and will continue to review this concept as the year goes on. We will have our first math test next Thursday!
Leader in Me: This week we focused on Habit #1: Be Proactive. We talked about how we choose our weather each and every day. We are in charge of making it a sunny day or a rainy day. We read stories and discussed how the characters chose their weather. We also talked about the difference between being proactive and reactive. I used a demonstration involving a bottle of pop and a bottle of water. Ask your child if they can tell you what happened!
Dates to Remember:

September 2 and 5: NO SCHOOL
September 15: Picture Day
Flashlight Friday
After a busy week first week of school, the students were able to enjoy some time reading with a flashlight. Please continue to encourage your child to read each night--10-15 minutes would be GREAT!

First Few Days of School
We have had a wonderful time getting to know each other. We have 7 girls and 11 boys in our class. (Unfortunately, one friend has been absent.) Hopefully, your child made it home with an envelope with his/her first day of school picture in it. If not, please check out the Photos page. (This page is password protected.)
Thank you, in advance, for your help throughout the coming school year. We are looking forward to a great time together in first grade.
