You have probably already noticed your child is ready for summer vacation. Our last day of school for the 2015-2016 school year is TOMORROW (Friday, May 20th.) We will dismiss school at 12:30 PM.
Your child will be bringing home most— if not, all of his/her school supplies TODAY--Thursday, May 19th.
On the last day of school (Friday), your child will receive his/her grade card–if all lunch charges are paid, Tiger Tales charges are paid, library books returned, etc. Your child will also be bringing home his/her Data Binder. So, your child WILL need his/her backpack. We will also reminisce over our year together.

Our Rainy Field Trip
We had a WONDERFUL time on our field trip to the movies and the park! First, the students picked up their snack (popcorn and a drink) then they were off to see Kung Fu Panda 3 while it rained and rained. After our morning of fun, we were off to the park. (Yippee! The rain had stopped.) The Nathaniel Greene Park was PERFECT! We played on the equipment with our friends. All this could not have been possible without our volunteers. So, a HUGE thank you for all the volunteers! You are appreciated!
I have added pictures to our photos page. Please email me if you have forgotten the password for this page.

Field Day Volunteers Needed
Field Day 2016 is right around the corner! Coach Ferguson is needing parent volunteers to help with this fun event! Each volunteer is asked to work either a morning or afternoon session (only 1/2 day). Pre-K, K, and 1st graders will have their Field Day in the morning...2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders will have their Field Day in the afternoon. If you volunteer, you are encouraged to work a station opposite of when your child's Field Day is scheduled (i.e., work a morning station (9;15-11:30) if you have a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grader...work an afternoon station (12;45-3:00) if you have a Pre-K, K or 1st grader). This will allow you the opportunity to watch your child's class and help the classroom teacher while they participate in the activities. If you are interested in helping run a Field Day station, please contact Coach Ferguson at [email protected] or call 862-6308 ext. 1164. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Yearbooks
Parents, unfortunately the school didn't have enough yearbook order forms to send home with each child. However, I was able to send home form with most students. (Students with older siblings probably did NOT get an order form.) So, if your child didn't make it home with a yearbook order form AND you would like to order a school yearbook. Please see the form below for more information.

Is it a Keeper?
This week the students have been measuring various classroom items using tiles, cubes, and paper clips. However, our lessons which involved measuring fish seemed to be the most fun. (I am thankful the fish were just paper fish.)

Gingerbread Ornaments*
We made gingerbread ornaments this week, and we had a blast. If you would like to make ornaments at home with your family, please check out our recipe below.
EASY GINGERBREAD MEN
(Makes 6 ornaments)
1/2 cup applesauce
1/2 cup cinnamon
2 tablespoons of household glue (We used Elmer's School Glue.)
1. Mix all ingredients together and roll on wax paper to 1/4-inch thickness.
2. Use a cookie cutter to cut out the shapes of the ornament.
3. Poke a small hole in the top of the ornament using the end of a straw, pencil, chopstick, or similar object.
4. Allow ornaments to air dry for 1-3 days.
5. Decorate ornaments. (Ornaments need to be completely dry.) We plan to use fabric paint to decorate our ornaments.
*In the past, I have always used the recipe listed above. However, this year I thought we would try it without the glue to make our ornaments.

Pumpkin Fluff
Our science experiment this week involved measuring the ingredients to make Pumpkin Fluff. The students really enjoyed measuring the ingredients; however, remembering NOT to touch their clothes, the wall, their hair was more difficult. (Don't worry! After a few reminders to go BACK to wash their hands, the students remembered.)

Reading! Reading! Reading!
For the past few of weeks, we have been working on making connections in reading. We learned that a text-to-self connection is when a book reminds us of something that has happened in our own lives. We know that a text-to-text connection is when a book reminds us of something that has happened in another book.
I want to encourage you to continue reading each night with your child. It DOES make a difference in your child's reading progress.

How Many Drops of Water?
The students had lots of fun making their predictions then conducting their experiments. In our test, it made a difference if the penny was dull or shiny. It also made a difference if we were putting the drops of water on the head side of the coin or the tail side of a coin. If your little scientist would like to try this experiment again at home, please click HERE for the directions.

"Our Mad Scientists"
This has been a busy week. To help celebrate, we made "Mad Scientists" this week. We learned scientists ask questions to learn, form a hypothesis, test a hypothesis, record their data, and come to a conclusion. In the coming weeks, we will be learning more about the scientific method. |
Flashlight Friday
After a busy week of testing, the students were able to enjoy some time reading with a flashlight.
Please continue to encourage your child to read each night--10-15 minutes would be GREAT! I have uploaded some pictures of the students. If you would like the password to view the photos on the photo page, please email me.

First Full Week of School
Wow! We had a busy week.
In Writer's Workshop, this quarter our unit of study in writing will be narrative writing. To kick off this unit, the students wrote about a special day in their lives. Many students wrote stories about losing their first tooth, but some students wrote about scoring a goal or making a home run. I am so excited to see how the students will progress this quarter.
In Reader's Workshop, we discussed where to find particular books in our classroom library and learned about taking care of our books. We also started Daily Five. We discussed how to select a just right book. Then we practiced selecting books to read.
Math Workshop seemed to be a highlight of the day for many students because we spent some time exploring our math tools. Our math tools were the cubes, geoblocks, and pattern blocks.
During our theme time, we spent time learning our classroom rules and routines. One of our favorite activities was making our "No David" craft and writing school rules for our character.
While the students seemed to enjoy learning in Reader’s, Writer’s, and Math Workshops, I think their favorite activity was one of our “community building” activities. The community building activity was “Find Someone Who.” Now we know which students visited the beach this summer, which students have blue eyes, and which students love watermelon. Our list went on and on, but we loved getting to know our new classmates. We are so excited to learn more about each other and to learn together. First grade is going to be so much fun!

First Day of School
We had a wonderful time getting to know each other. We have 13 girls and 10 boys in our class. (Unfortunately, one friend was absent today.)
Thank you looking at your child’s Communication Folder (Blue folder). Each child has a calendar in his/her communication folder which has a stamp for the kind of day that your child has here at school. Example–Green means a good day. Yellow means that he/she had to have few reminders to follow the school rules.Tiger Stripes means he/she has had an EXCEPTIONAL day.
Thank you, in advance, for your help throughout the coming school year. We are looking forward to a great time together in first grade.
